Systemic vascular changes in spontaneous occlusion of the circle of Willis.

چکیده
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We examined the presence of systemic etiologic factors causing vascular changes in so-called "spontaneous occlusion of the circle of Willis" (cerebrovascular moyamoya disease) to determine whether extracranial, as well as intracranial, vessels are involved in this disease. METHODS Histopathologic examination and morphometric analysis of the extracranial vessels were performed in 13 patients with this disease. RESULTS The histopathologic findings of the extracranial vessels were as follows: 1) advanced intimal fibrous thickening similar to that of the intracranial vessels; and 2) characteristic intimal fibrous nodular thickening, which may indicate organization of mural thrombi, at the proximal portions of the pulmonary arteries in three of 13 patients. Morphometric analysis revealed significant intimal thickening of the pulmonary arteries (p less than 0.05), renal arteries (p less than 0.05), and pancreatic arteries (p less than 0.01) in patients with this disease as compared with age- and sex-matched control patients. CONCLUSIONS On the basis of these findings, it is highly likely that this disease has systemic etiologic factors, as well as focal etiologic factors, that work to create vascular change in both the intracranial and extracranial vessels.

Modeling the Circle of Willis Using Electrical Analogy Method under both Normal and Pathological Circumstances
Background and objective: The circle of Willis (COW) supports adequate blood supply to the brain. The cardiovascular system, in the current study, is modeled using an equivalent electronic system focusing on the COW.Method: In our previous study we used 42 compartments to model whole car- diovascular system. In the current study, nevertheless, we extended our model by using 63 compartments to m...

ABSTRACT Anatomical variations have great importance among various medical disciplins. The significance of these variations differ from some points of view including system, site and degree of variation. Vascular system is a common site of variations. The importance of this system in supplying the organs, specially the brain has made it to be in focus for its variations. The main sourc...
متن کاملAnatomical Variations of Circle of Willis in 57 Human Brains
Purpose: The circle of willis is responsible for blood supply of brain, which may suffer from anatomical variations. These disturbances can lead to aneurysm or even arterial rupture. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anatomical structure of the cerebral arteries forming the circle of willis in adult cadavers. Also, cerebral versus non- cerebral versus non-cerebral arterial walls wer...
متن کاملVariations of the Circle of Willis in 100 Cadavers in Kerman Province
Background & Aims: The relationship between variations of Willis circle and some cerebrovascular diseases has been shown in previous studies. A few studies have been conducted in Iran on these variations. Methods: This study was performed on 100 recently deceased Iranians due to car accidents who had been referred to Kerman Forensic Medicine Center for autopsy. The length and diameter of cerebr...
متن کاملA longitudinal study of collateral flow patterns in the circle of Willis and the ophthalmic artery in patients with a symptomatic internal carotid artery occlusion.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The purpose of the present study was to assess whether the direction of flow via the circle of Willis and the ophthalmic artery (OphA) changed over time in patients with a symptomatic occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) who did not experience recurrent cerebral ischemic symptoms. METHODS Sixty-two patients with a symptomatic ICA occlusion were investigated wi...
